Adult Homecare and Adult Day Care can both benefit your senior loved one

Source: adapted from article online at www.eldercarelink.com

Sheryl O’Neal, Eldercare Advisor at Care For Life said, “Many families choose to blend adult homecare and occasional attendance at an adult daycare. Care For Life understands that there might be financial constraints for providing full time in-home care and informs families about the possibility of having their aged loved one attend an adult day care for socialization and activities to break the monotony some experience by always staying at home.”

The experts at www.eldercarelink.com adds: As you may already be aware, there is a lot of terminology used by eldercare service providers to describe the different types of services they offer. For those just becoming familiar with their eldercare options, the variety of terminology can be a frustrating source of confusion. A very common misconception is that Adult Day Care and In-Home Care are the same thing. In fact, the two services are very different, as described below:Adult Day Care is a service that allow seniors to go to a community-based center during the day for additional social interaction with other people their age. Lunch is provided. Crafts and other activities such as group sing-a-longs are designed to keep them engaged with the world around them.

In-Home Care services are preferred by 78% of seniors surveyed. Caring in-home caregivers provide assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation and socialization. The non-medical caregiver helps them remain in their homes more safely and independently for as long as possible.

Adult Day Care and In-Home Care are different services and each has its benefits. They get the care they need in their homes and can enjoy regular social interaction with people their age who share their interests at day care programs

Ask your loved one what they’d like to do. Even if they only want to go out to day care one day a week, offering a flexible variety of care will keep them healthier, and, we hope happier.

Adult day care centers provide a safe, secure environment for adults who are unable to stay alone during the day. They serve people challenged with the effects of aging, such as Alzheimer’s and other types of memory loss, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, or other ailments.

Adult day care centers provide socialization, community, stimulating activities, healthy meals and snacks, and support with activities of daily living. Some centers also offer nursing and healthcare services.

Adult day care centers can be an essential aid to caregivers. They allow caregivers to hold a job, take care of household responsibilities, see friends, and pursue other activities, knowing their loved ones are safe and entertained during the day.

Your elder may truly enjoy the stimulation of seeing other people as well as the programming of many centers, and you, the caregiver, will know your elder is being cared for while you work or run errands.

It’s important to note that adult day care centers are typically open during weekdays. Some offer additional evening or weekend care. But participants do not live at the centers; they live at home.

The following is from Author Lynn Ivey from www.agingcare.com about Adult Day care centers.

[Note: Care For Life ~Experts in Eldercare since 1995~ provides geriatric care management and homecare by experienced, monitored caregivers. Families often combine adult day care for daytime with additional homecare for evenings and overnight care and assistance so that seniors can remain in their own homes safely and independently for as long as possible. Call for a free telephone consultation today at 843-852-9090.]
