Stroke Strikes Fast-and so must you!
June 9, 2009
I had a wonderful morning learning about stroke awareness in the community. MUSC sponsored the event for persons in the community who are already involved in educating on health matters through civic and/or faith-based initiatives. There new mantra is “Stroke Strikes Fast—and so must you! Call 911″. Children are taught to call 911 in emergencies and an EMS captain said children come home from school and see a problem with a parent or grandparent and they don’t hesitate to call 911. More often than not, adults reason away the need to call for help. Have you ever called for help for someone having a stroke? Tell us about it.

Got something to say?
My husband experienced momentary blindness in his right eye on a Saturday while working in the yard. He had fallen unexplainably twice in the several weeks prior to the blindness episode. These separate events did not add up to warning signs of the possibility to an impending stroke. He didn’t see the doctor until Monday.
His doctor was appalled that he hadn’t gone directly to an emergency room for evaluation for stroke. What followed shortly was carotid artery bypass surgery with full recovery. Our doctor said my husband was “lucky”. I call it something higher than that!
A woman said, “My 86 year old father fell three weeks ago coming out of a friend’s office. He broke his hip which I know is the gateway to failing health for the elderly. He passed away within a few weeks, never leaving the hospital. I wish we could get everyone to listen to the tremendous risks of falling and breaking a hip.”
